WHAT LOVE ISN’T AND IS

WALKING IN THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT

Chapter 4 Sunday Message (WHAT LOVE ISN’T AND IS) – 2/13/22

(Book - Walking in the fruit of the spirit by: Gloria Copland)

Intro:

According to the Scriptures in the New Testament, a person who is really walking in the fruit of the spirit is love ruled, yielding to, and showing the nature of God to others, which is love.

1 John 4:8 KJV

“He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”

When love is in our lives then all the other fruits of the spirit will follow. Love holds the other fruits of the spirit together and functioning properly in our lives.

If we want to enjoy God’s wonderful blessings, we need to keep love fully in our minds and hearts all the time.

We can do great things and have great faith but if they are not connected to the love of God and flowing through everything we do and say then they are worthless.

As we renew our minds to the ways of love and the fruit of the spirit by spending time in the Word of God, we will start noticing where we are out of line in our love walk and then be able to change. Let’s check out what the Word of God says about what true love is and what it isn’t.

Foundation Scriptures:

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 AMPC

Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily.

5 It is not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); it is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act unbecomingly. Love (God’s love in us) does not insist on its own rights or its own way, for it is not self-seeking; it is not touchy, fretful, or resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to a suffered wrong].

6 It does not rejoice at injustice and unrighteousness but rejoices when right and truth prevail.

7 Love bears up under anything and everything that comes, is ever ready to believe the best of every person, its hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it endures everything [without weakening].

8 Love never fails [never fades out or becomes obsolete or comes to an end]. As for prophecy (the gift of interpreting the divine will and purpose), it will be fulfilled and pass away; as for tongues, they will be destroyed and cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away [it will lose its value and be superseded by truth].

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 NIV

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

I. TRUE UNCHANGING LOVE ISN’T:

· Isn’t Envious – (feeling of desire for something that someone else has that you want.) Is giving

· Isn’t Boastful & Proud – (showing excessive pride and self – satisfaction in one’s achievements.)

· Isn’t Dishonorable to others. – (bringing disgrace on someone or something.) Is Respectful

· Isn’t Self - seeking. – (having concern for your own welfare and interests before others.) Is sharing

· Isn’t angered easily. – (annoyed or difficult to handle.)

· Isn’t keeping record of wrongs. – (an unjust, dishonest, or immoral actions.)

· Isn’t enjoying it when others do wrong. – (taking delight or pleasure in unjust, immoral actions of others.)

II. TRUE UNCHANGING LOVE IS:

· Is Patient – (able to accept or tolerate delays, problems, or suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious.)

· Is Kind – (the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.)

· Is Rejoicing in the truth. – (great joy and jubilation in what is right.)

· Is Protection – (preventing someone or something from suffering harm or injury.)

· Is Trustworthy – (able to be relied on as honest or truthful.)

· Is Hoping in people – (a feeling of expectation and a desire for good things to happen to others.)

· Is Perseverance – (continue in a course of action even in the face of difficulty or with little or no chance of success.) Never Quitting!

· Is Never failing – (reliable, consistent, loyal, does not fail ever, inexhaustible.)

Conclusion:

As we can see through the Word of God, there is a check list of what love is and what it isn’t. So, if we are renewing our minds by the Word of God and allowing the Holy Spirit to bring the fruit of the spirit alive and growing in us, we will know when the primary fruit (LOVE) is or isn’t flourishing in our lives.

We will have a good idea whether we have just begun and have grown in the fruit of Love and the other fruits of the spirit.

Remember, that in order to have fruit you must be constantly sowing the spirit and reaping from the spirit.
