Intro:
WHY SHOULD WE STUDY THE WORD OF GOD?
ISN’T IT WASTED TIME TO STUDY GOD’S WORD?
WHAT WILL STUDING GOD’S WORD HELP US WITH?
STUDY – The devotion of time and attention to acquiring knowledge on a subject – especially by the means of books.
Different versions of the Bible state that Study also means- work hard /diligence/ doing your best/ concentrate / and apply yourself to.
Foundation Scriptures:
2 Timothy 2:15 KJV
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
Ecclesiastes 12:11-13 NLT
“ The words of the wise are like cattle prods—painful but helpful. Their collected sayings are like a nail-studded stick with which a shepherd drives the sheep.
12 But, my child, let me give you some further advice: Be careful, for writing books is endless, and much study wears you out.
13 That’s the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty.”
2 Timothy 3:14-17 NKJV
“But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them,
15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16 ALL SCRIPTURE is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine,
for reproof,
for correction,
for instruction in righteousness,
17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
I. STUDYING GOD’S WORD MAKES US WISE UNTO SALVATION:
Romans 10:8-10 NKJV
“But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach):
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
II. STUDING GOD’S WORD IS PROFITABLE FOR GOOD DOCTRINE:
Romans 16:17-18
“Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them.
18 For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple.”
GOOD DOCTRINE - BELIEFS
1. Death of Jesus 2. Resurrection Of Jesus 3. Jesus is coming back again 4. Love the Lord your God with all your mind, soul, and spirit.
5. Love your neighbors as yourself.
III. STUDING GOD’S WORD BRINGS REPROOF (rebuke) FOR EVIL:
1 Timothy 5:19-21
“Do not receive an accusation against an elder except from two or three witnesses.
20 Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear.
21 I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels that you observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing with partiality.”
IV. STUDING GOD’S WORD GIVES US CORRECTION IN ALL AREAS OF OUR LIVES:
Proverbs 3:11-12
“My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord,
Nor detest His correction;
12 For whom the Lord loves He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights.”
(Help change our direction 180 degrees and then follow the Lord)
V. STUDING GOD’S WORD INSTRUCTS US IN THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD:
1 Corinthians 2:15-16
“But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.
16 For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.”
Conclusion:
2 Timothy 3:17
That the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
Study Time is not Wasted Time –
Because it helps us grow up from babies to adults with right motives, attitudes, actions, direction, and gives us instructions in how to become right standing with God and mankind.
