WHAT DOES PENTECOST SUNDAY AND MEMORIAL DAY HAVE IN COMMON?

astor Tim P. Blaisure – 05/28/23 – Pentecost Sunday Message

Intro:

In the last six months we have celebrated Jesus birth, His life, His death, His resurrection, and His ascension into Heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father.

Today is Pentecost Sunday (The day the Holy Spirit came upon the 120 in the upper room) and tomorrow is Memorial Day (The day we remember those who served our country and those who have died).

So, I want to put them together and remember what Christ Jesus death did and how He is alive today and that makes Him a living memorial.

Foundation Scriptures:

Acts 2:1-8 NKJV

“When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.

6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.

7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans?

8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?”

I. THE COMFORT OF CHRIST’S SOON COMING:

1 Thessalonians 4:13-15 NKJV

“But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.

15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep.”

II. THE PROMISE OF ANOTHER COMFORTER:

John 14:15-17

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.

16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—

17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”

III. THE GIFT OF HIS PEACE:

John 14:25-27

“These things I have spoken to you while being present with you.

26 But the Helper (Comforter), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Conclusion:

As you can see Jesus didn’t just die for our sins and leave it at that, but He rose from the dead and then in:

John 20:21-23

“So, Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”

22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
